Urban Adoption of 5G Fixed Wireless Access Surpasses Rural Areas

A new Ookla report reveals that 5G fixed wireless access (FWA), initially designed to bridge the digital divide in rural areas, is now gaining significant traction among urban residents. In Q2 2026, 70% of FWA speed tests originated from city dwellers, compared to 30% from rural regions. While traditional fiber and cable internet still offer faster speeds, FWA’s appeal lies in its cost-effectiveness, ease of installation, and flexibility. T-Mobile leads with median speeds of 222.7Mbps, outpacing AT&T’s Internet Air (161.4Mbps) and Verizon’s 5G Home (83.9Mbps). However, these speeds still lag behind fiber-optic (up to 500Mbps) and high-end cable plans (300-1Gbps). Urban users are drawn to FWA for its flat-rate pricing models, which avoid hidden fees associated with traditional broadband services. Additionally, FWA eliminates the need for lengthy installation times, making it a convenient alternative for densely populated areas. The report highlights how 5G FWA is reshaping internet access by offering a viable solution for both rural and urban populations, despite its current limitations in speed.
