The State of Password Security: 98.5% Fail Basic Hacking Test

A recent study of 10 million compromised passwords from a billion leaked credentials revealed that 98.5% of them are considered weak and vulnerable to hacking. Despite years of security awareness training, many users still choose easily guessable passwords, making them low-hanging fruit for automated hacking tools. Experts recommend passwords to be at least 15 characters long and include a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols to ensure stronger protection. The analysis emphasized that even with advanced hacking equipment, a password longer than 15 characters could take years or centuries to crack. However, it’s crucial to also use unique passwords to avoid falling victim to password reuse vulnerabilities. Some tech giants like Google and Microsoft are already recommending users switch to more secure alternatives like passkeys to further improve security.
