Meta launches Edits, a short-form video editor to compete with CapCut
Meta has introduced a new short-form video editing app called Edits, designed as a direct competitor to ByteDance’s CapCut. Launched for both iOS and Android, Edits integrates closely with Instagram, requiring users to log in with their Instagram account. The app features five main sections: Ideas, Inspiration, Projects, Record, and Insights, each tailored to support content creation and performance tracking. Edits offers a variety of creative tools including green screen editing, timeline controls, automatic captions, an audio library, and filters. It also includes advanced functions like beat markers, animation tools, and precise object cutouts. While Edits is still in its early stages compared to the more mature CapCut, which offers a broader range of editing tools and a larger music library, it presents a compelling alternative—particularly amid ongoing regulatory uncertainty around TikTok in the U.S. Unlike CapCut, Edits currently does not offer a subscription model and remains free to use, though future paid features have been hinted at by Instagram head Adam Mosseri. One current limitation is that Edits is mobile-only, whereas CapCut also has a web version. As Meta continues to develop the app, users can expect more robust functionality in upcoming updates.
