Leapmotor C10 REEV: South Africa’s new range-extended electric vehicle with hotel-style comfort
The Leapmotor C10 REEV, launched in South Africa in October 2025 through a joint venture with Stellantis, introduces locals to a new type of new-energy vehicle. The C10 is a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV), meaning it combines a petrol engine and an electric motor. However, the petrol engine does not drive the wheels—it functions solely as a generator to recharge the battery and support the electric motor. The EV-only driving offers a smooth, quiet experience, with the battery providing 145km of range and a combined total driving range of 970km when using the petrol engine.
There are some quirks, though. The C10 uses a single NFC key card to unlock the vehicle via the driver-side mirror and to start the car, which can be inconvenient. Most controls, from mirrors to the boot, are managed through the infotainment screen, creating frustration when the car’s driver-distraction sensor warns about looking away from the road. Despite these minor annoyances, the driving experience is impressive. The 158kW motor delivers instant torque for easy overtaking, and the fuel consumption remains efficient at 6.9 litres per 100km.
The interior exudes a premium feel, especially in the top-of-the-range camel brown variant, with ambient lighting, well-designed air vents, and a panoramic moonroof. One standout feature is ‘nap mode,’ which reclines the seat nearly 180 degrees, dims the moonroof cover, and plays rain sounds, allowing drivers to rest comfortably after long drives. Starting at R759 900, the C10 REEV balances innovative technology, style, and comfort, making it a strong contender for South African Car of the Year 2026.
