OpenAI to Require ID Verification for Access to Advanced Future AI Models

OpenAI is introducing a new identity verification requirement called ‘Verified Organization’ for developers seeking access to its most advanced AI models. According to a support page recently published by the company, this verification process will be essential to unlock future capabilities on the OpenAI API. The process involves submitting a government-issued ID from one of the countries supported by OpenAI. Each ID can only be used to verify one organization every 90 days, and not all organizations may be eligible.

OpenAI explains that the new measure is part of an effort to enhance safety and security, citing concerns over the misuse of its technology by a minority of developers who violate usage policies. The move also aims to protect intellectual property and address national security issues, such as alleged unauthorized data extraction attempts by entities potentially linked to North Korea and China.

As OpenAI’s models grow in complexity and utility, the company is tightening access controls to ensure ethical and lawful use. The verification process is designed to be straightforward and quick, taking only a few minutes, though it introduces a new gatekeeping mechanism for API users worldwide.
