TikTok’s Uncertain Future: Algorithm Changes and Looming U.S. Ban

In January 2025, TikTok users in the United States experienced a sudden 14-hour blackout when a Supreme Court ruling banning the app took effect. For a short period, around 170 million users had to confront the possibility of a TikTok-free world, triggering reactions that ranged from humor to panic. However, the app unexpectedly resumed functioning later that day, and many assumed things had returned to normal.

Yet, some users, like New York-based content creator Brielle Asero, noticed subtle but unsettling changes. Asero said her algorithm felt like it had reset, showing her videos that didn’t seem personalized. Though it improved over time, the disruption raised questions about how stable TikTok’s infrastructure and data algorithms are during such uncertain legal circumstances.

As the platform now approaches an April 5 deadline to find a new U.S.-based buyer or risk being shut down again, its future remains murky. Rumors of Amazon entering the race to acquire TikTok add another layer of complexity. For creators and consumers alike, the incident has left a lasting impression and heightened awareness of the platform’s vulnerability amidst political and legal pressures.
