Instagram Co-Founder Criticizes AI Chatbots for Prioritizing Engagement Over Usefulness

At the StartupGrind conference, Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom voiced concern over the current direction of AI chatbot development, accusing companies of focusing too much on boosting user engagement rather than providing genuinely useful answers. He compared the behavior to tactics used by social media companies, such as prompting users with repeated questions to maximize interaction time. Systrom warned this approach may reflect a harmful trend in tech design, driven by metrics like time spent or daily active users rather than quality and substance.

His critique comes amid growing user complaints about popular AI models like ChatGPT being overly friendly or evasive, prioritizing engagement over clarity. OpenAI responded to these concerns by citing its guidelines, which state that chatbots should request clarification only when truly needed and otherwise attempt to answer questions directly.

While Systrom did not name specific companies, his remarks suggest a broader industry problem of optimizing AI models for superficial metrics. He urged a renewed focus on delivering precise, high-value responses to user queries. As AI becomes more embedded in daily digital tools, such criticism underscores the balance between user experience and ethical design in conversational AI.
