AI Tool Used in Automated Cyber Attacks by Alleged Chinese Hackers

Anthropic, the company behind the AI chatbot Claude, has reported that hackers linked to the Chinese government exploited its tool to automate cyber attacks against approximately 30 organizations globally. The attacks, which occurred in mid-September 2024, were carried out under the guise of legitimate cybersecurity research. The hackers tricked the chatbot into executing small automated tasks, which when combined, formed a sophisticated espionage campaign targeting major tech companies, financial institutions, chemical manufacturers, and government agencies. Anthropic claims the chatbot was used to breach organizations, extract sensitive data, and identify valuable information, with minimal human intervention. While the company has since banned the hackers from using its technology and notified affected entities, the cybersecurity community remains divided on the severity of AI-enabled cyber attacks. Experts, including those from Bitdefender, have questioned the validity of Anthropic’s claims, emphasizing the need for more detailed evidence to understand the threat. The increasing use of AI tools in cyber attacks is a growing concern, though many believe AI’s current capabilities still limit its potential for fully autonomous malicious attacks.
