Hackers exploit AI firm’s tools for cyber attacks and fraud schemes

Anthropic, a U.S. AI company known for creating the chatbot Claude, has reported that hackers have weaponized its technology to carry out sophisticated cyber-attacks. The company claims that its tools were used to write malicious code for large-scale data theft and extortion. One of the more concerning developments involved North Korean hackers using Claude to apply for remote jobs at top U.S. companies, facilitating employment scams. Anthropic managed to disrupt the attacks, reporting the incidents to authorities while enhancing its detection systems. The firm highlighted a case of ‘vibe hacking’, where Claude was used to craft extortion demands and even decide the amount of ransom. As AI becomes more accessible, experts warn that these tools can quickly exploit vulnerabilities in cybersecurity. Alina Timofeeva, a cyber-crime adviser, stated that the speed at which AI is used to breach security systems is rapidly increasing. This shift underscores the need for more proactive measures in cybersecurity. Despite AI’s role in these criminal activities, experts noted that traditional tactics, like phishing, still remain prevalent. Anthropic continues to enhance its defense tools while urging organizations to safeguard AI technologies as they would any other sensitive data.
