Emerging AI Startups Secure Funding as Google and Meta Advance Product Releases
Several key developments in the AI and XR space were highlighted this week. Hedra AI, founded in 2021, secured $32 million in Series A funding led by Andreessen Horowitz. The company is developing a foundation model called Character-3, which integrates text, audio, and images to generate realistic digital avatars for brands. Cartwheel, a browser-based 3D animation startup founded by veterans from OpenAI, Pixar, and Riot, raised $10 million led by Craft Ventures. It enables text- or video-based rigging of animated characters and targets industries like games, advertising, and education. Schemata, emerging from Stanford, announced a $5 million seed round. Its AI platform produces immersive 3D training simulations using spatial and contextual data, already in use by the U.S. Department of Defense.
Meanwhile, Meta launched several updates, including a ChatGPT-like app integrated with Instagram and Facebook data, and enhancements to its Ray-Ban smart glasses via the Llama model. Meta also introduced Builder Bot in Horizon Worlds and a new version of AssetGen for 3D content generation. Google is preparing for its I/O conference, with speculation around Veo 3, the latest in its advanced video-generation models. The current Veo 2 already supports detailed text-to-video rendering and will soon appear in consumer devices like Honor 400 smartphones. These developments mark a significant acceleration in AI-driven content creation across industries.
