Alibaba is undergoing a strategic shift in its artificial intelligence approach by prioritising AI agents that can integrate its vast ecosystem of businesses. The company recently launched multiple AI agent integrations and announced that its AI operations will be separated from the cloud computing division under the newly formed Alibaba Token Hub, led by CEO Eddie Wu. These AI agents consume significantly more data units than conventional chatbots and aim to enhance digital assistant capabilities for commerce and enterprise applications. Alibaba’s Qwen AI chatbot has moved beyond simple Q&A to assisting users in making direct purchases via chat, even piloting a large coupon campaign that briefly overwhelmed the system due to popularity. Analysts note that Alibaba’s integrated ecosystem—covering e-commerce, logistics, food delivery, travel, and ticketing—gives it a unique advantage, as AI agents can manage tasks end-to-end from chat interface to fulfilment. The company is also expanding into enterprise AI with its Wukong platform, which coordinates multiple AI agents for business tasks like document editing, spreadsheets, and research. However, the AI division faces challenges with key personnel resignations, raising concerns about talent retention. Alibaba’s efforts reflect broader trends in Chinese tech, focusing on monetising AI and reshaping consumer behaviour despite economic slowdown and competition.
