WikiPortraits: The Volunteer Project Improving Wikipedia’s Celebrity Photos

Wikipedia, one of the most visited websites, faces a persistent issue: low-quality or outdated images of notable individuals. Due to copyright restrictions on professional photography, the site struggles to feature high-quality celebrity photos. To address this, volunteers launched WikiPortraits, a project that recruits photographers to capture new, freely licensed images at major events. The initiative, led by Kevin Payravi and Jennifer Lee, has engaged 55 photographers worldwide, including professionals and enthusiasts. They have covered events such as the SXSW festival, Cannes, and Sundance, improving Wikipedia’s image library with portraits of stars like Elijah Wood and Florence Pugh. The project has received positive feedback from celebrities eager to update their online presence. Although the photographers are unpaid, many see the initiative as a way to enhance Wikipedia’s quality while gaining valuable experience. WikiPortraits now aims to expand its global reach and secure access to high-profile events like the Oscars and the Met Gala. Their efforts contribute not only to better representation of famous figures but also to increased visibility for lesser-known artists and filmmakers.
