Amazon apologises for massive AWS outage affecting major platforms

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has issued an apology to customers after a major outage on October 20, 2023, which disrupted several major platforms including Snapchat, Reddit, and Lloyds Bank. The issue, stemming from AWS’s data center in North Virginia, caused significant downtime for over 1,000 services worldwide. Amazon explained that the outage was due to internal system errors, specifically involving the Domain Name System (DNS) records, which are essential for connecting websites to their IP addresses. This disruption affected users across various sectors, from online gaming services like Roblox and Fortnite to financial platforms like Venmo and Lloyds Bank. While many platforms recovered quickly, others faced prolonged issues. In an effort to prevent future incidents, Amazon committed to improving its service availability. Experts highlighted the dangers of relying too heavily on cloud providers like AWS and Microsoft Azure, especially for critical services. The incident also led to unexpected consequences, such as disrupting the function of smart beds from the company Eight Sleep. AWS has vowed to learn from the outage and bolster its systems to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
