Federal Agencies Investigate Amazon Drone Crashes into Crane in Arizona

Amazon is under federal investigation after two of its Prime Air delivery drones collided with a construction crane in Tolleson, Arizona, near Phoenix. The incident occurred on October 1, 2025, when both MK30 drones were flying northeast mid-route and crashed into the boom of a stationary crane used for roofing a commercial distribution facility. The drones sustained significant damage, and one person on-site was evaluated for possible smoke inhalation. Following the accident, Amazon paused drone deliveries in Tolleson while cooperating with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), both of which are investigating the crash. This comes months after a previous pause in drone deliveries in Tolleson and College Station, Texas, due to other drone crashes earlier in the year during testing in Oregon. Amazon resumed those deliveries after software issues were addressed. The company aims to expand Prime Air drone deliveries to 500 million packages annually by 2030, but progress has been cautious due to safety and regulatory challenges. The investigation will further assess the safety of drone operations in urban environments and Amazon’s technology improvements.
