Amazon tests AI-powered smart glasses for delivery drivers to boost efficiency
Amazon has introduced a prototype of AI-driven smart glasses designed specifically for its delivery drivers. Named ‘Amelia,’ these glasses feature a camera and a built-in display that pair with a waistcoat. Drivers can use a button on the waistcoat to take photos of deliveries. The company is testing the product at various locations with numerous delivery service partners and hundreds of drivers across the US. The smart glasses are aimed at enhancing operational efficiency in the ‘last mile’ of Amazon’s delivery network. Amazon claims the glasses can save drivers up to 30 minutes per 8- to 10-hour shift by helping them locate packages faster and reduce repetitive tasks. In addition, the glasses include a safety feature that automatically turns them off when the driver is in a moving vehicle to prevent distractions. Although initially intended for Amazon drivers, there is potential for the product to be marketed to consumers in the future. The company also unveiled a robotic arm that will work alongside warehouse workers to improve parcel sorting speed and reduce injury risks. These innovations align with Amazon’s broader effort to improve its logistics operations using AI and automation.
