AMD Discusses Ryzen Naming Confusion and Radeon NOW at IFA 2025

At the IFA 2025 event, AMD addressed a few important topics regarding its Ryzen branding and future plans. One of the biggest discussions was about the Ryzen naming confusion. Initially, the Ryzen 7000 mobile chips had clear architecture indicators with the third digit, making it easy for consumers to understand. However, this approach was changed for the Ryzen 200 and 300 series, which include rebranded 7040 and 8040 parts. The Ryzen Z2 family for gaming handhelds also spans multiple architectures, including Zen 2, Zen 3, Zen 4, Zen 5, and RDNA 2, 3, and 3.5, leading to further confusion. AMD admitted that this overlap could be confusing but justified it by pointing out Intel’s similar practice of using multiple architectures simultaneously. The company also confirmed it has no plans to launch a rival to NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW service, focusing instead on partnerships with Sony and Microsoft, whose cloud streaming platforms rely on AMD’s APUs.
