Hybrids are Gaining Ground Over Fully Electric Vehicles: Is Synthetic Fuel the Next Step?
In recent years, hybrid vehicles have experienced a sharp rise in popularity, overtaking fully electric vehicles (EVs) in the U.S. market. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, hybrids accounted for approximately 14% of all new light vehicle sales in the first quarter of 2025, which is twice the market share of fully electric vehicles. This surge in hybrid sales can be attributed to the higher cost and charging infrastructure challenges of EVs. Car manufacturers, including major companies like GM, Porsche, and Lamborghini, have adjusted their strategies to accelerate hybrid development, even launching iconic hybrid models like the Porsche 911 and Lamborghini Revuelto. Some automakers, like Lamborghini, are also exploring synthetic fuels as a potential solution to maintain internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles beyond 2030. Experts believe that synthetic fuels, especially bio-based ones, could help decouple ICE technology from environmental harm, making them a possible bridge to a greener future. While synthetic fuels still face challenges, such as their energy efficiency, they could provide a more immediate and practical solution compared to fully transitioning to electric vehicles.
