Android 16 Beta 4 Leak Reveals Upcoming UI and Feature Changes

Recent leaks from Android 16 Beta 4, as reported by Mishaal Rahman for Android Authority, have given users and developers a glimpse into Google’s next major OS update. The leaks indicate a significant overhaul of the user interface, particularly in the notification panel, which is set to adopt a blurred and transparent design, moving away from the current basic black background. This change aims to provide a more modern and visually appealing look when users pull down the notification shade, whether fully or partially. Additionally, the quick settings tiles are becoming more rounded and bubbly, while the icons inside them are taking on a squarer shape, possibly to support a new ‘one-tap’ function for toggling features like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Another notable update is the introduction of more geometric icon shapes in the Pixel Launcher, including options like squares and various polygon shapes, alongside the standard circle. These icon choices will be visible on the home screen and in the app drawer. The volume slider in the quick settings panel is also being redesigned, shifting from a pill-shaped bar to a longer rectangular one with soft corners and a vertical bar at the end. On the lock screen, Google is experimenting with a new font for the clock and repositioning the date and temperature information. If notifications are present, the clock moves to the top left, with the date and temperature now displayed on the right side. Smaller UI refreshes include colored icons in the Settings app, updated status bar icons for Wi-Fi and 5G, and a new horizontal battery icon with a color-coded background and percentage display. While these changes have been uncovered in the latest beta, Google has not made them fully available to all users yet, and their final implementation remains uncertain. Android 16 is expected to debut in Q2 2025, with more details likely to be revealed at Google’s I/O 2025 event in May.
