Android’s Upcoming Feature Will Alert You About Fake Cell Towers and Potential Surveillance Risks

Android users will soon have an additional layer of security to help protect their communications. As part of Android 16, Google is adding new features to detect when devices are connecting to fake cell towers, known as IMSI catchers or stingrays. These devices, often used by law enforcement and sometimes for malicious surveillance, impersonate legitimate cell towers to intercept sensitive data like call metadata, location information, and personal communication. The new Android update will provide users with alerts if their device connects to an unencrypted network, warning them that calls, messages, and data are vulnerable to interception. Users will also receive notifications when returning to a secure, encrypted network. Furthermore, Android 16 will include an option to block 2G networks, a common target for IMSI catchers. While the feature is expected to roll out with Android 16, widespread adoption might take some time as hardware requirements are still being implemented in compatible devices.
