Android Phones Use Sensors to Detect Earthquakes Seconds Before Ground Shaking
Recent studies have highlighted how Android smartphones are capable of detecting earthquakes before seismic waves hit the ground, offering critical seconds of warning. This advance is made possible due to the widespread adoption of smartphones with built-in sensors. Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, studied the Android Earthquake Alert (AEA) system, which has been active from 2021 to 2024. The system has detected over 11,000 earthquakes worldwide, with a significant percentage of these events providing users with alerts seconds to a minute before the shaking starts. Notably, the system has proven effective across 98 countries, offering notifications for quakes with magnitudes over 4.5. About 85% of users who received alerts experienced shaking, with a portion of them getting the alerts before the ground started moving. The study also emphasized that these smartphone-based alerts are comparable in effectiveness to national warning systems, making them a valuable tool for global earthquake preparedness.
