Android Canary Introduces 90:10 Split-Screen for Better Multitasking

The latest Android Canary release introduces a significant upgrade to the split-screen multitasking feature, adding a new 90:10 split-screen configuration. This new feature allows users to allocate 90% of the screen to a primary app, with the remaining 10% dedicated to a secondary app. The secondary app can be easily swapped with the primary one with just a tap, making multitasking on tall, rectangular displays more efficient. This new 90:10 split is offered alongside the existing 70:30 split, providing users with more flexibility. While the 90% app feels nearly full-screen, the 10% sliver is only suitable for quick access to the secondary app. This feature has been under development for months and is part of Android 16’s source code. It has been previously seen in OPPO’s Boundless View multitasking system, but Google has enhanced it for Android phones. The new feature is already available in Samsung’s One UI 8, based on Android 16. With this addition, Google improves Android’s split-screen experience, addressing limitations in previous versions, where multitasking felt lackluster compared to OEM-specific solutions.
