Debate Between UK Police and Tech Giants Over Measures to Tackle Mobile Phone Theft

Senior representatives from Apple and Google have expressed concerns to the UK Parliament over the Metropolitan Police’s recommendation to use IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) numbers to block stolen mobile devices. The Met Police revealed that two-thirds of thefts in London are phone-related, with a significant link to violent crimes. Authorities are urging tech firms to prevent stolen devices from accessing their cloud services, a move they argue could drastically reduce theft incentives. Apple and Google, however, highlighted potential issues with fraud and stressed that any expanded use of IMEI blocking would require industry-wide agreement and better verification mechanisms. They also pointed to the recent rollout of new anti-theft features, including Apple’s Stolen Device Protection and Google’s Theft Detection Lock. Apple further emphasized its Activation Lock feature as a key deterrent against the second-hand parts market. MPs expressed frustration at the perceived slow pace of action, accusing both firms of lacking urgency. Despite the tension, both Apple and Google indicated openness to further discussions but emphasized that comprehensive solutions need broader collaboration beyond individual firms.
