Apple Shifts US iPhone Production to India and Vietnam Amid Tariff Pressures

Apple has announced a major shift in its manufacturing strategy for products destined for the US, moving most iPhone production from China to India, and relocating the assembly of iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and AirPods to Vietnam. This decision comes in response to the US government’s imposition of tariffs on Chinese imports under President Donald Trump, which Apple estimates will increase its costs by nearly $900 million this quarter. Despite these challenges, Apple reported a 5% year-on-year increase in revenue for the first quarter, reaching $95.4 billion. CEO Tim Cook emphasized the company’s ongoing commitment to investing $500 billion across various US states over the next four years, but acknowledged that India and Vietnam will be the primary beneficiaries of the supply chain shift for US-bound devices. China will remain the main production hub for Apple products sold outside the US. The move marks a significant change from previous years, when Apple claimed only China could meet its manufacturing needs. Industry analysts see this as a remarkable transition, though they note Apple still has progress to make. Amazon, another major tech company, reported strong sales growth and is also diversifying its supply chain to weather tariff-related disruptions. Both companies appear resilient, with Amazon’s sales up 9% and profits surging over 60% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025.
