Apple CarPlay iOS 26 Introduces Widgets, Live Actions, and Refreshed Design

Apple has unveiled significant upgrades to its standard CarPlay system with the launch of iOS 26, following the recent introduction of CarPlay Ultra. The update, announced at the 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference, brings several new features and a refreshed look to the in-car interface. Widgets, previously exclusive to CarPlay Ultra, are now available in standard CarPlay. Users can access these widgets by swiping right from the CarPlay home screen, and they are organized into two columns, allowing for two widgets to be displayed simultaneously. Currently, supported widgets include weather, calendars, clocks, smart home devices, and reminders, with more expected in future updates. Additionally, Live Actions—originally a phone lock screen feature—are now integrated into CarPlay. This allows drivers to view live sports scores, food delivery progress, flight updates, and more directly on the CarPlay home screen, eliminating the need to check their phones while driving. Unlike CarPlay Ultra, the standard version does not take over other vehicle screens or gain control over functions like radio or climate settings. The update also addresses user concerns about calls and messages being overly intrusive. Incoming calls now appear as small pop-ups with caller ID, minimizing screen obstruction and allowing drivers to stay focused on navigation. Message pop-ups now include default reaction emojis for quick responses and options to pin important messages or group chats for easy access. Visually, both CarPlay and CarPlay Ultra receive a new design language called ‘Liquid Glass,’ featuring updated colors, wallpapers, more rounded app icons, and a new dark mode. These enhancements aim to improve both functionality and aesthetics for Apple users on the road.
