Apple introduces age verification for iPhone users in the UK

Apple is introducing new age checks for iPhone and iPad users in the UK, requiring users to verify their age to access certain services, including 18+ apps. After updating to the latest iOS 26.4 software, users will be prompted to confirm their age either by providing a credit card or scanning an ID. If users fail to verify their age or are underage, content filters will be activated automatically. This initiative is in line with the UK’s stricter child protection laws. Ofcom, the UK’s media regulator, has welcomed this move as a significant step for child and family safety, making the UK one of the first countries to enforce such measures. Apple will check users’ age using existing account details, such as payment methods or the length of their account history. Additionally, children under 13 will not be able to create an account without a guardian’s consent. The move follows broader concerns about online safety for children and the impact of social media, with the UK government also conducting trials and consultations on social media restrictions for young users.
