Apple Halts Development of Camera-Enabled Apple Watch Meant for 2027

Apple has decided to cancel its development of an Apple Watch model equipped with a built-in camera, which was originally slated for release in 2027. According to a Bloomberg report, the camera would not have been used for conventional photo or video capture or FaceTime calls. Instead, the feature was intended to allow users to point their watch at objects and receive contextual information—similar to the ‘Visual Intelligence’ functionality in iPhones. This could have included identifying landmarks, translating text, recognizing plants, or providing store hours. Despite the cancellation, Apple is continuing to explore wearable camera technology, as evidenced by ongoing development of AirPods with embedded infrared cameras. These AirPods may offer enhanced spatial audio, AI-powered features, and gesture controls. Apple has not provided an official reason for discontinuing the Apple Watch camera project, nor has it ruled out revisiting the concept in the future. The cancellation reflects the challenges of integrating camera technology into compact wearable devices while preserving usability, privacy, and practicality.
