Apple TV+ Integrates iPhones into MLB Broadcasts for High-Quality Coverage

Apple TV+ has begun using iPhones as part of its camera setup for MLB broadcasts, starting with the Dodgers-Giants game. The iPhone 17 Pro models were used to capture moments from angles that traditional cameras couldn’t reach, such as behind the dugouts and among the crowd. The integration of iPhones into professional sports coverage allows for more intimate shots, while maintaining high broadcast quality. Executive producer Royce Dickerson and director John Moore praised the technology, noting the surprise at the exceptional picture quality despite the phones’ relatively low cost compared to traditional camera rigs. The phones were equipped with software for broadcast-ready frame rates and color grading adjustments to match other cameras. The cameras have provided unique views of the action, like a shot from inside Fenway Park’s Green Monster. The move could be a stepping stone for more widespread use of mobile devices in sports broadcasts. Given the low cost of an iPhone compared to traditional equipment, this could open up high-quality coverage to more events. This shift aligns with Apple TV+’s broader strategy of incorporating its technology into sports, with MLB’s $85 million annual rights deal set to run through 2028.
