Apple Watch Series 12 Introduces New Colors, Enhanced Sensors, and AI Features Compared to Series 11
The Apple Watch Series 12, announced alongside the iPhone 18 series at Apple’s annual event, brings significant hardware and software improvements over the Series 11. The most noticeable changes include new color options and materials: the Series 12 offers aluminum cases in dark bronze, light gold, black, and space gray; titanium cases in radiant gold and natural; and a ceramic case in pearl white or night blue. The Series 12 also features Ceramic Shield 2 glass on aluminum models, which is 60% harder than the Ion-X glass used on the Series 11. The digital crown is less recessed, and the case size is slightly larger despite maintaining the same screen area. Sensor upgrades are a key focus, with the Series 12 introducing a ‘Health Sensing System’ that captures heart rate readings every five seconds and HRV readings every five minutes—60 times and 24 times more frequently than the Series 11. The new S11 chip, more powerful than the S10 in the Series 11, enables Apple Intelligence, improved step tracking, and 25% longer battery life for outdoor workouts. New software features include Readiness, which assesses physical capacity based on sleep, training load, and vitals, and Audio Intelligence features like Shazam song identification in the background and Sound Recognition for accessibility. The Series 12 starts at $399, matching the Series 11’s starting price, but the larger 46mm model costs $100 more than the Series 11’s equivalent size. While the Series 11 still supports most upcoming software features, the Series 12 offers enhanced health monitoring and AI capabilities that the Series 11 cannot match.
