U.S. Army Awards Contracts for Nuclear Microreactor Vendors and Sites

The U.S. Army has announced the selection of five nuclear energy vendors and five initial locations to develop and operate nuclear microreactors under the Janus Program. Partnering with the Defense Innovation Unit, the project will allocate up to $2.2 billion in funding to enhance military energy resilience and global power projection capabilities. The selected vendors—Antares Nuclear Inc., BWXT Advanced Technologies LLC, General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems, Radiant Industries Inc., and Westinghouse Government Services—are based at major Army installations including Fort Bragg, Fort Campbell, Fort Hood, Fort Benning, and Fort Drum. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on external power grids by providing secure, reliable baseload energy for military operations. The program also emphasizes collaboration with private sector partners to accelerate technological advancements and ensure accountability through milestone-based funding. With plans to deploy over 20 reactors across War Department sites by 2028, the Army highlights its role in revitalizing American nuclear industrial capacity while supporting national security objectives. The project aligns with Executive Order 14299, which mandates the development of nuclear energy solutions for military applications.
