Nick Clegg reflects on the culture shock of joining Meta and Silicon Valley’s unique environment

In an excerpt from his new book, Nick Clegg, the former Meta executive, shares his experience of adapting to Silicon Valley’s distinct culture. Arriving at Meta in 2018 after a political career in the UK and Europe, Clegg found himself in an environment that was vastly different from the political world. The first culture shock came from the engineer-driven mindset at Meta, where data, acronyms, and logical thinking dominate over traditional political storytelling. Clegg describes how he struggled to fit into a world where every argument requires statistical backing and where decisions are made based on probabilities rather than intuition. Another surprise was the personal and competitive nature of the Silicon Valley environment, epitomized by Mark Zuckerberg’s passion for mixed martial arts (MMA). Clegg humorously recounts a bizarre experience where he ended up in an MMA training session with his deputy, Joel Kaplan, under the watchful eyes of Zuckerberg himself. While these experiences were a challenge, Clegg ultimately grew from them, noting that his time at Meta offered valuable insights into the workings of Silicon Valley, both its strengths and its flaws.
