Sydney commuters discover hidden wireless phone chargers at bus stops

In Sydney, commuters have recently discovered an innovative feature being rolled out across the city’s bus stops and transport hubs: built-in wireless phone chargers. The surprise came to light when a TikTok user, Lauren, filmed herself at a Bondi bus stop where her phone started charging wirelessly simply by placing it on the bench. Her video went viral, gathering nearly 190,000 views and sparking astonishment among Sydneysiders who were unaware such technology was already available.

The charging pads, called ‘Power Spots’, were first trialed at Liverpool and Campbelltown stations in 2023 and are now expanding across Sydney. They provide a combination of wireless pads and USB ports, allowing up to seven devices to charge simultaneously. Importantly, many have been installed outside ticketed areas, making them accessible to anyone at any time. Transport for NSW has confirmed that the initiative has received highly positive feedback, with users ranging from students and office workers to day-trippers and even rough sleepers. Officials emphasized that the feature improves both convenience and safety, particularly for people traveling alone at night.

In addition to these upgrades, Sydney Trains has introduced ‘rubber gap fillers’ at more than 20 platforms to reduce accidents between trains and platforms. In 2023, around 450 people fell through gaps, with Redfern Station recording over 50 incidents. The new fillers can withstand human weight, prevent items from falling, and have already proven effective: no falls have been recorded at fitted stations since their introduction in 2021. Together, these measures reflect ongoing efforts to modernize Sydney’s transport network and enhance passenger safety and comfort.
