New Autofocus Glasses Aim to Replace Bifocals with Adaptive Liquid Crystal Lenses
Finnish eyewear company IXI has developed high-tech glasses featuring liquid crystal lenses and built-in eye tracking that can dynamically adjust vision correction based on the wearer’s needs. The technology aims to replace traditional bifocals and varifocals by enabling a single pair of glasses to correct both near- and far-sightedness in real-time. CEO Niko Eiden highlights the importance of maintaining a normal aesthetic to ensure user acceptance, contrasting with earlier failed tech-glasses like Google Glass. The lenses respond to electrical fields that rotate liquid crystals, adjusting how light passes through. Although early prototypes were flawed, newer versions have improved in clarity and responsiveness. Despite the innovation, challenges remain in ensuring safety, especially for critical tasks like driving or surgery. The frames house small batteries that last up to two days and can be recharged overnight. IXI has not disclosed pricing or a release date. Similar efforts by Adlens and other companies show a growing trend toward smart eyewear. Meanwhile, researchers are exploring lenses that may even slow or reverse eye conditions like myopia, offering potential vision improvement for millions globally.
