AOMedia Releases AV2 v1.0 Specification for Advanced Video Compression

The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) has officially released the AV2 v1.0 specification, marking a major step forward in video compression technology. Building upon the widely adopted AV1 standard, AV2 is designed to deliver significantly improved compression efficiency, allowing high-quality video streaming, broadcasting, and real-time video conferencing at lower bitrates. Development of AV2 has been ongoing for more than five years, reflecting the growing demand for optimized video delivery across multiple platforms. While new hardware with native AV2 support may take time to arrive, AOMedia provides the AOMedia Video Model (AVM) as reference software for testing and development. Additionally, VideoLAN developers are creating DAV2D, a CPU-based AV2 decoder, to enable broader software support. The AV2 1.0 specification is publicly available at av2.aomedia.org, allowing developers and companies to prepare for adoption. This new standard represents a significant advancement in next-generation video technology, aiming to enhance user experiences by reducing bandwidth requirements while maintaining video quality.
