Avalanche Energy makes significant progress toward creating a desktop fusion reactor
Avalanche Energy, a fusion energy startup, has recently achieved a key milestone by operating its desktop fusion reactor for several hours at 300,000 volts. This milestone brings the company closer to the goal of creating a reactor capable of generating more energy than it consumes, a critical breakthrough in the fusion energy field. Unlike other fusion companies that rely on powerful magnets, Avalanche’s technology uses electrical currents to accelerate ions, which then collide and fuse, releasing energy. The startup is aiming for reactors with outputs ranging from 5 kilowatts to several hundred kilowatts. This technology could also generate neutrons at low cost, which would be useful for producing radioisotopes and testing materials for future fusion reactors. Avalanche has secured a $10 million grant from Washington State to build FusionWERX, a facility designed to allow other fusion companies and researchers to test their technologies. The company expects to become profitable by 2028, with significant revenue coming from the sale of radioisotopes and renting out FusionWERX. Despite rumors of an upcoming Series A fundraising round, co-founder and CEO Robin Langtry declined to provide specifics. Avalanche’s ultimate goal is to scale up their technology and contribute to the advancement of sustainable fusion energy.
