Benchmarking Bcachefs and Other Linux File-Systems on Kernel 6.15

This article presents fresh performance benchmarks of several Linux file-systems-Bcachefs, Btrfs, EXT4, F2FS, and XFS-tested on the Linux 6.15 kernel, which is scheduled for stable release soon. Bcachefs, a copy-on-write file-system nearing removal of its experimental status, was tested alongside other well-established file-systems using default mount options on a high-end 2TB Crucial T705 PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD. The benchmarks aim to evaluate how Bcachefs competes in terms of performance and stability on the latest Linux kernel. The testing environment and methodology ensure a fair comparison by formatting each file-system fresh and running them on the same hardware. This evaluation is timely given Bcachefs’s evolving maturity and the Linux 6.15 kernel’s inclusion of various improvements to storage and file-system management.
