Bluesky Tests NBA Playoff Integration to Attract Sports Fans

Bluesky is testing a new feature during the NBA playoffs aimed at making its platform more appealing to sports enthusiasts. The feature includes a red ‘live’ border around posts from the NBA’s official account, signaling ongoing games. When users click the NBA’s profile picture, they are redirected to the promoted event—even if it’s outside of Bluesky. According to COO Rose Wang, the intent is to help users discover real-time events rather than keep them strictly within the app.

Unlike its predecessor Twitter, which spent heavily on sports streaming rights, Bluesky isn’t investing in expensive content licenses. Instead, the platform relies on venture capital and avoids advertising, allowing it to experiment with community engagement rather than maximizing user retention through monetization. Bluesky’s strategy offers a cost-effective alternative by directing users to external content rather than hosting it.

This new feature will also be tested with WNBA games, signaling a broader interest in engaging sports audiences. Despite the migration of some sports fans from Twitter to Bluesky, the former still holds a larger share of real-time sports conversation. Bluesky’s new strategy aims to close that gap and establish itself as a competitive space for live sports discourse without replicating Twitter’s costly model.
