Accel’s Sonali De Rycker Discusses Europe’s AI Potential and Regulatory Challenges
Sonali De Rycker, general partner at Accel, expressed both optimism and concern over Europe’s role in the global AI landscape during a recent TechCrunch StrictlyVC event in London. She emphasized that Europe has all the necessary ingredients for AI leadership—ambition, talent, capital, and academic strength—but faces serious challenges from fragmented regulations and the looming AI Act. While supporting the idea of regulation for high-risk sectors like healthcare and finance, De Rycker warned that overly broad and restrictive policies could hamper innovation.
She underscored the need for the EU to become more unified and startup-friendly, mentioning the ’28th regime’ as a promising step toward regulatory cohesion. Geopolitical shifts and decreasing U.S. support have made self-reliance more urgent for Europe, she noted. De Rycker praised emerging tech hubs like Zurich, Munich, and Paris and highlighted Accel’s investment strategy, which focuses on application-layer AI rather than foundational models due to the latter’s high capital demands. Notable investments include Synthesia and Speak, which are pushing new user behaviors and business models.
Despite challenges, De Rycker remains confident in European founders and believes Europe can become a tech leader—if it can strike the right regulatory balance during this pivotal innovation cycle.
