BYD Tests Solid-State Batteries in Seal Sedan, Aiming for 1,200 Miles of Range
BYD has started testing solid-state batteries in its Seal sedan, an electric vehicle designed to compete with Tesla’s Model 3. Initial tests show that the Seal could achieve an impressive range of up to 1,200 miles (1,875 km) on a single charge. Solid-state batteries, which offer higher energy density than traditional lithium-ion batteries, could dramatically improve both the driving range and the charging speed of electric vehicles. In fact, BYD’s solid-state batteries recently achieved a milestone by gaining 932 miles (1,500 km) of range in just 12 minutes of charging. Although these tests are still in progress, with mass production not expected until 2030, BYD’s approach could revolutionize the EV market. The Seal is expected to be the first vehicle to feature solid-state batteries, with deliveries set to begin in 2027. At that time, the technology is expected to lower battery costs, making it competitive with current lithium-ion technology. BYD’s solid-state batteries have an energy density of 400 Wh/kg, nearly twice that of current lithium-ion batteries, offering more range and faster charging times. As BYD continues to lead the electric vehicle market, the company’s solid-state technology is setting the stage for future innovations in the EV sector.
