ByteDance plans to launch a US-specific version of CapCut to comply with regulations

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is reportedly planning to release a new version of its video editing app, CapCut, specifically designed for U.S. users. This move appears to be a part of ByteDance’s broader strategy to comply with the 2024 U.S. law requiring it to divest from TikTok and its other U.S. operations. According to Business Insider, ByteDance is also working on a new version of TikTok for the U.S. market, in anticipation of a potential sale of the app to U.S.-based investors. CapCut has already been a huge success, with over 1 billion downloads on the Google Play Store and ranking as the top video app on the U.S. App Store, even surpassing Instagram and YouTube. While the focus is currently on CapCut and TikTok, it’s still unclear whether ByteDance will develop similar U.S.-specific versions of its other platforms, such as Lemon8 and Gauth. This move highlights ByteDance’s efforts to adapt to U.S. regulatory pressures while continuing to serve its large user base in the country.
