Center Parcs Deletes X Account Link After Customer Confusion

Center Parcs UK removed links to its former X (formerly Twitter) account from its website after an IT consultant, Carl Lennon, took over the handle @CenterParcsUK and began receiving messages from genuine customers. The company had deleted its X account in January, making the handle available for reuse. Lennon, who initially claimed it as an experiment, received customer inquiries about booking changes, payments, and reservations. Concerned about potential security risks, he refrained from responding but warned that a malicious actor could exploit the situation by soliciting sensitive information. After Lennon tried unsuccessfully to contact Center Parcs, BBC News intervened, prompting the company to remove the outdated links. Center Parcs admitted the links should have been removed earlier. Lennon, who was initially considering booking a holiday with the company, decided against it after observing the oversight. He expressed surprise at the company’s slow response and stated that he would now deactivate the account. The incident highlights the challenges businesses face when managing their social media presence, especially when leaving platforms like X. Other brands, such as Balenciaga and The Guardian, have also departed from X following Elon Musk’s takeover in 2022.
