CERN Migrates Accelerator Control Systems to Debian Due to Hardware Compatibility Issues

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, plans to transition its entire accelerator-control infrastructure—from approximately 2,200 industrial computers and embedded systems—to Debian 13 by the end of 2026. This shift involves systems critical for managing particle accelerators, laboratory equipment, and operational functions that generate vast amounts of data. The migration decision stems from Red Hat’s adoption of the ‘-march=x86-64-v2’ compiler flag by default in RHEL, which CERN views as ‘forced obsolescence’ of older hardware. CERN had previously used Scientific Linux (a RHEL derivative) and later CentOS before considering CentOS Stream.
