CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, plans to transition its entire accelerator-control infrastructure—from approximately 2,200 industrial computers and embedded systems—to Debian 13 by the end of 2026. This shift involves systems critical for managing particle accelerators, laboratory equipment, and operational functions that generate vast amounts of data. The migration decision stems from Red Hat’s adoption of the ‘-march=x86-64-v2’ compiler flag by default in RHEL, which CERN views as ‘forced obsolescence’ of older hardware. While the move primarily affects accelerator control systems, it remains unclear if all server infrastructure or scientific-research-based systems will be included. CERN had previously used Scientific Linux (a RHEL derivative) and later CentOS before considering CentOS Stream. The organization’s decision highlights growing challenges with maintaining legacy hardware compatibility in modern Linux distributions. Industry experts note similar migrations by other organizations due to CentOS and CFEngine’s declining support.
