Character AI Introduces Parental Supervision Features for Teen Safety

Character AI, a startup that allows users to create and interact with AI-driven characters, has introduced new parental supervision features aimed at improving teen safety. These features provide parents with a weekly summary of their teens’ activity on the app, including time spent on the platform and interactions with different characters. However, parents will not have direct access to chat logs. The move follows a series of lawsuits and criticisms regarding the company’s approach to child protection. Previously, Character AI implemented measures such as an under-18-specific model, usage time notifications, and content restrictions for teens. The company also developed classifiers to filter sensitive material. This latest update is presented as a rapid response to growing concerns, contrasting with what the company claims is a slower rollout of similar features by other platforms. The announcement comes amid ongoing legal challenges, including a lawsuit alleging the platform played a role in a teen’s suicide, which Character AI is seeking to dismiss on First Amendment grounds.
