Humanoid Robots Compete in Beijing Half-Marathon Alongside Human Runners

On April 19, 2025, Beijing became the site of a groundbreaking event where 21 humanoid robots participated in a half-marathon alongside thousands of human runners. The race covered a distance of 21 kilometers (13 miles), and it marked the first time such an event has been held. The robots, ranging in height from 3ft 9in to 5ft 9in, were designed to mimic human form and motion. Wheels were not allowed; only bipedal walking or running was permitted.

The standout performer was a robot named Tiangong Ultra, developed by the Beijing Innovation Centre of Human Robotics, which completed the course in two hours and 40 minutes. The men’s human winner, by comparison, finished in one hour and two minutes. According to the robot’s creator, Tiangong Ultra’s performance was supported by advanced leg design and a human-like running algorithm. Its battery was only changed three times during the race.

Some challenges arose, such as one robot falling at the start line and another colliding with a railing. Many of the robots were accompanied by trainers, and some required physical support. Robots sported various outfits, including running shoes and even boxing gloves. This event underscores China’s growing presence in humanoid robotics and its innovation in real-world testing environments.
