On November 18, 2025, a massive outage in Cloudflare’s services affected digital platforms worldwide, exposing the vulnerabilities in global internet infrastructure due to the reliance on a few major network providers. Cloudflare, which handles nearly 20% of global web traffic, experienced a technical failure caused by an internal database change. This led to widespread issues, from social networks to financial services and government platforms. The outage began around 11:20 UTC, causing HTTP 500 errors across multiple interconnected services. Initially suspected to be a DDoS attack, it was later revealed that a change in ClickHouse database permissions caused a chain reaction, leading to system failures. Major platforms affected included X (Twitter), OpenAI, Canva, Spotify, government sites, and even Downdetector, which monitors service outages. Cloudflare restored services by 14:30 UTC, with full recovery by the end of the day. This incident underscores the risks associated with the increasing centralization of internet infrastructure, as problems in one provider can have cascading global effects. Experts warn that while such outages are inevitable, future systems should focus on maintaining operational continuity even during failures. This issue raises concerns over the security of critical infrastructure, particularly in regions like Latin America, where dependence on foreign service providers is high.
