Co-op Confirms Cyber-Attack Impacted All 6.5 Million Members, Personal Data Stolen

The CEO of Co-op, Shirine Khoury-Haq, has confirmed that a cyber-attack on the retailer in April led to the theft of personal data from all 6.5 million of its members. While no financial or transaction data was taken, hackers gained access to names, addresses, and contact information. Khoury-Haq expressed her deep regret over the breach, which she described as personal due to its impact on both the company’s members and staff. She also mentioned that the hackers’ actions could not be completely erased, but the data was monitored and shared with authorities. Co-op’s response includes a partnership with a cyber-security recruitment company to help steer young talent into legitimate careers in tech. The attack was part of a wave of cyber-crimes targeting multiple retailers, including Marks & Spencer and Harrods. In connection with the attacks, four individuals were arrested for offenses including computer misuse and blackmail. The National Cyber Security Centre advises affected individuals to be cautious of suspicious communications and review their accounts for unauthorized activity.
