Mexico Launches Coatlicue, a High-Performance Public Supercomputer for Research and Innovation
The Mexican government has officially unveiled Coatlicue, the most powerful public supercomputer in Latin America, during the morning conference on November 26, 2025. With a projected budget of approximately 6,000 million pesos (around 326 million USD) and a construction timeline of 24 months, Coatlicue is designed as a high-performance GPU-based system optimized for artificial intelligence and modeling workloads. Once completed, it is expected to reach a computing power of 314 petaflops, significantly surpassing the region’s largest private supercomputer and multiplying Mexico’s current top system’s capacity by over 100 times. The system will integrate around 15,000 GPUs across roughly 200 liquid-cooled cabinets, requiring advanced infrastructure for cooling, electricity, and connectivity. Coatlicue aims to support a broad range of applications, including high-resolution climate modeling, hydrological predictions, energy planning, epidemiological simulations, large-scale fiscal and customs data processing, and urban mobility projects. The initiative is a collaborative effort among leading academic and research institutions, including the National Polytechnic Institute, the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and Cinvestav, ensuring both specialized human capital and a scientific ecosystem that maximizes public value. The project aligns with Mexico’s strategic goals for technological sovereignty, offering public access while addressing operational, security, and energy efficiency challenges. If fully realized, Coatlicue could become a cornerstone for scientific research, talent development in computing, and data-driven public policy in Mexico, while positioning the country as a regional leader in high-performance computing.
