Crunchyroll Investigates Data Breach Involving Customer Support Ticket System
Crunchyroll, the popular anime streaming platform, has confirmed a data breach that occurred after a hacker claimed to have gained unauthorized access to its internal systems and customer data. The incident was linked to a third-party vendor, Telus Digital, which handles customer support for Crunchyroll. Screenshots provided by cybersecurity experts suggest the hacker accessed Crunchyroll’s Zendesk support system, stealing sensitive support ticket information, including over 6.8 million email addresses. The breach reportedly occurred through a compromised Okta single sign-on account belonging to a support agent. Although Crunchyroll has not found any evidence of ongoing unauthorized access, the company is working with cybersecurity professionals to investigate the breach. The stolen data, including support ticket records, appears to have been downloaded until early 2025, when access was revoked. This breach comes after a recent security incident at Telus Digital, although Crunchyroll has not confirmed any direct link between the two incidents.
