HSBC UK Chief Highlights Growing Cybersecurity Risks and IT Challenges in Banking Sector

Ian Stuart, CEO of HSBC UK, has raised serious concerns about the persistent threat of cyber-attacks on financial institutions, emphasizing that cybersecurity remains a top priority for banks. Speaking to the Commons Treasury Committee, Stuart revealed the immense financial and operational efforts being made to defend against constant digital threats. He noted that HSBC processes 1,000 payments per second and implements 8,000 IT updates weekly, underlining the scale of its infrastructure.

The banking sector has seen hundreds of hours of tech outages in the past two years, with nine major UK banks experiencing over 800 hours of disruptions. Barclays alone faced significant issues in January, disrupting services for many customers on payday, and could owe up to £12.5 million in compensation. Other institutions such as Lloyds, TSB, Nationwide, and HSBC also suffered outages in February, affecting over 1.2 million people.

Cybersecurity experts like Lisa Forte and Professor Oli Buckley stressed the rising frequency and sophistication of attacks, which now pose threats beyond data breaches — risking public confidence and financial stability. The urgency for robust IT defenses is growing across all sectors, not just banking, as recent attacks on retailers like Co-op and Marks and Spencer demonstrate.
