Tanzania Strengthens National ID System to Support Growth and Security
In Tanzania, the National Identification Authority (NIDA) has become a key institution in promoting social inclusion, economic development, and national security through digital identification. NIDA’s work ensures that every citizen receives an official identity, which has become vital for accessing essential services such as banking, healthcare, education, and employment. Under the leadership of Managing Director James Kaji, the authority has implemented strategies to improve citizen registration, speed up ID card production, and expand use of the National Identification Number (NIN). These efforts have reduced delays and complaints, particularly in regions where the backlog of pending IDs was large. However, challenges remain due to high demand, limited staff, and equipment shortages in some districts, which have caused overcrowding and slower service delivery. To resolve this, NIDA has adopted digital innovations such as SMS-based tracking, enabling citizens to check the status of their IDs without visiting offices. The government has also improved working conditions for NIDA staff through salary reviews, more tools, and capacity-building programmes. Officials like Permanent Secretary Ally Senga Gugu highlight that the national identification system not only supports administration but also strengthens national security and the digital economy. With the NIN increasingly required for activities like opening bank accounts or registering SIM cards, the public’s awareness and cooperation are crucial. NIDA continues to aim at full coverage, including rural areas, as part of Tanzania’s mission to build a modern, efficient, and inclusive digital society.
