SideFX Releases Free Procedural Houdini Tools from Project Grot for Game Development
SideFX has started releasing a series of custom procedural tools created for Project Grot, a tech demo that demonstrates advanced world-building techniques for game development. The tools, developed in Houdini, allow artists to generate complex 3D assets quickly. Currently available tools include procedural ruins and procedural flesh, both of which can be used within Houdini or integrated into Unreal Engine via Houdini Engine. A new procedural bridge tool has also been added, although it is only available as a Houdini .hip file. Project Grot showcases an ancient, cave-like environment filled with lava and organic textures, built by a small team within two months. The tools are freely available but require commercial licenses of Houdini for use within Unreal Engine. SideFX provides additional videos on related topics such as volcanic landscapes and rock generation, although some are without downloadable files. Project Grot highlights how procedural techniques can enhance both artistic freedom and production efficiency in 3D environment creation.
